Numeracy at Ashburton Primary School

Building confident, capable and curious learners who can use mathematics to understand, explain and navigate the world around them.

At Ashburton Primary School, we believe every student can become a confident, capable and curious numeracy learner. Our numeracy program develops strong mathematical foundations while encouraging students to reason, investigate, make connections and apply their learning in familiar and unfamiliar situations.

Students learn across the six strands of the Victorian Mathematics Curriculum: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. These areas are taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that supports students to build increasingly sophisticated mathematical knowledge and skills as they progress through the school.

Our curriculum provides a balanced approach to all areas of mathematics. Strong number knowledge sits alongside opportunities to explore patterns, measure and compare, reason about space, interpret data and understand chance.

Learning is planned across year levels so that important concepts are introduced, revisited and extended over time.

Developing mathematical proficiency

Our numeracy teaching develops four interconnected mathematical proficiencies:

Understanding
Students explain concepts and make connections between ideas.

Fluency
Students recall and apply mathematical knowledge efficiently.

Reasoning
Students justify their thinking and evaluate strategies.

Problem-solving
Students use mathematics creatively in new and real-world contexts.

What numeracy lessons look like

Numeracy lessons include daily review, activation of prior knowledge, explicit teaching, guided practice, independent application and opportunities for reflection. Teachers clearly model new concepts, check for understanding and provide targeted support or extension based on assessment evidence and classroom observations.

Students are encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking, compare different strategies, learn from errors and recognise that complex problems may have more than one pathway to a solution.

Regular retrieval practice helps students retain important knowledge and connect current learning with previously taught concepts. Teachers revisit and interleave learning from different strands so that students develop flexible knowledge that can be applied across a range of contexts.

Problem-solving with purpose

Problem-solving experiences help students develop mathematical models, select appropriate strategies, interpret results and refine their approaches.

Students work with both real-world and theoretical contexts, developing the confidence to tackle unfamiliar tasks and communicate their reasoning clearly.

Consistent, responsive planning

Our numeracy planning is aligned with the Victorian Mathematics Curriculum and supported by whole-school scope and sequence documents, term planners and weekly classroom planning.

This provides consistency across year levels while allowing teachers to respond to the particular learning needs of their students.

Through this balanced approach, students develop the mathematical knowledge, confidence and persistence needed to use numeracy effectively at school, in everyday life and as a powerful way of understanding the world.
