Student Free Days

School Council has this week approved the final two student free days for 2025.

On Friday, October 31st, teachers will be undertaking tasks including reporting writing, assessment and professional development both on site at school and off site elsewhere.

On Monday, November 24th, we will host noted classroom management guru Bill Rogers who will present to staff on a range of practices and approaches to ensure class time is focussed on learning for all students.

As noted previously, our next student free day  will take place on the final day of Term 3, Friday September 19th with staff undertaking a Curriculum Day. The final day for students in Term 3 will be Thursday, September 18th with a 2.30pm finish.

Working with Children Check

Recently in the news there has been much discussion around child safety including the Working with Children Check (WWCC). A WWCC is a vital commodity for parents to have for a range of reasons. For our purposes, we require a WWCC for those wanting to volunteer for excursions or camps. Ensuring we have a valid WWCC is important, as we check off the validity on the day of the event to ensure that the WWCC is still current. If you haven't already applied for a WWCC

Art Show '25

Art Show

Keep you calendar clear on October 23rd as we celebrate our first Ashy Art Show. Running straight after school and open until 6.30pm, the hall will be transformed into one of the finest art galleries in the world as we fill it with the work of our amazing student artists! Stroll through the paintings, portraits, sculptures, models and more as we each student shares a piece from this year's art class. Also on display will be the the seven collaborative year level pieces, presented on large canvases and available to bid on as part of our fundraising auction! (see more below)

Art Incursions

Next week's Art Incursion is the kick off for our forthcoming Art Show in Term 4. On Wednesday morning our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students will head to the hall for an introductory session where the big picture will be laid out (literally). Each student in a year level will complete a small individual piece of art in a particular style and using common media. Each year level will have a different style and aesthetic. Our visiting artists will guide them through that process and assist the students in completing their individual piece. Once they are all complete, our visiting artists will collect the individual pieces and create one large communal piece on a framed canvas for each year level which they will deliver back to the school. These seven, unique and distinct pieces of art will be up for auction as part of the Art Show celebrations.

We are also looking for parent helpers for the sessions. If you can help please visit the SignUp page - https://signup.com/go/pStzvdF

Prep news

Week 2 Term Three

Congratulations to the preps who celebrated their 100th day of school last week. They had such a great day commemorating this special day. They made special 100 days of school cookies, crowns, counted their 100 items, enjoyed a hilarious magic show put on by Micky the Magician and paraded their amazing costumes to each other and then to the whole school at assembly.

Thanks to the families of the preps for taking the time to create a memorable costume for  your child to make the day special.

STEM News

STEM Year 3 & 4

Our Year 3 and 4 students have embarked on an exciting journey into the world of robotics using Edison robots. These programmable robots are providing students with hands-on experience in coding and problem-solving, laying a strong foundation for their STEM education. Both year levels have done an amazing job using barcodes to program the Edisons and will soon use EdBlocks to create their own programs.

STEM Year 5 & 6

Our Year 5 and 6 STEM students are building on last term’s skills and diving headfirst into their very own SPHERO Olympics! In teams the students are:

  • Designing flags & chariots: Teams are sketching and crafting creative chariots using recycled materials, then decorating them with colourful flags—perfect for the big reveal before the action begins.

  • Opening Ceremony: Each team will proudly display their flag and chariot, getting a chance to size up their competitors before the games start.

  • Training for the Games: Students are preparing for events like speed skating, figure skating, hockey, and alpine skating, where they’ll drive and code their Spheros around obstacle courses and tracks. This hands-on experience develops real-world STEM skills in physics, engineering, coding, and teamwork.

What's up in Yr 3

The Year 3s have had a fantastic start to Term 3, and the students have been working hard exploring:

  • We’ve been learning how to make our stories exciting and engaging from the very beginning! We’ve discussed elements of narrative writing, what makes a sizzling start and have begun using storyboards to help us plan our narratives. This allows us to organise our ideas and keep our readers hooked right to the end.
  • We’ve been investigating unit fractions and using them in everyday situations, and we’ve also explored measurement through real-world activities.
  • We also began our new Connected Learning unit called Allies for Inclusion. We’ve started talking about fairness, kindness, and what it means to be a good friend. We are learning to listen to others with understanding and empathy as we explore the idea of social justice.

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the term brings.

Latest from Yr 1

It’s Term 3 and the Year 1s have started the Term off in a fabulous fashion.

We have been studying

  • Shapes : identifying and classifying 2D shapes. We grouped them according to rules and then asked our friends to work out the rule
  • Number and Algebra : working out patterns and continuing them using shapes and items in the classroom, as well as making up patterns for our friends to solve
  • Reading and Visualising : we have been studying visualising when we read, as well as reading Indigenous stories such as ‘The Rainbow Serpent’
  • Connected Learning : Building a Culture of Respect. This week, we were lucky enough to go on an excursion to CERES in Brunswick and discover how the Indigenous Australians show respect to the land. We listened and acted out the story of ‘Tiddilick’ (with amazing costumes!) which built on our reading topic, heard about cave paintings and the ochre used to paint them and got to taste native Australian ingredients.
  • Lola (1A) said “I liked feeling the possum skin”, Max (1A) said “I loved when we painted on ourselves with ochre”. Myrah (1B) said “I liked dressing up in the costumes”. James (1B) said “I liked painting ourselves with ochre”. Millie (1C) said “It was really fun painting ourselves”. Kareem (1C) “I loved the face painting because it looked cool”.
