From the Principal

Capital Works Grant

Each year, the Department of Education opens up applications for grants for various capital works across schools. This year we will be submitting an application to refresh the oval with synthetic turf. Our aim is to provide a welcoming and vibrant play space for our students. While real grass is lovely, the chance to create a level field with line markings that can easily be used year round is one that we must investigate. Put simply, the price tag of close to $500,000 of a new synthetic turfed oval is out of reach for our school. The grant application process takes 6 months before we find our if we have been successful, so fingers crossed for good news in December!

Junior School Council

Our JSC is busy in looking to spend the fundraising monies from the Colour Run and Election Day Sausage Sizzle and Cake Stall. They are looking at sourcing some semi-portable soccer goals so we can create two fields of play, reducing congestion and improving safety. They are also looking at other playground improvements and will present their ideas next term.

Classroom visits

Your child may have come home talking about some visitors to the classroom over the last fortnight. Mrs Roberts and myself have been conducting observations across the general and specialist classrooms, as we begin to build a culture of classroom observations and learning walks for our staff. We've been pleased with what we have seen so far!

Curriculum Day September 19th

Get your planning in early as we are announcing a Curriculum Day for Friday, September 19th. This is also the last day of Term 3 so holidays can begin a little earlier for some. Staff will spend the day with a professional development focus on our implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model, while the afternoon will be available to help discharge owed time in lieu for staff following the extended hours of Parent Teacher Conversations the week before (September 8th-11th).

Some playground issues....

Some of your children may have come home from school recently talking about a "funeral" at school. Some may have come home with a flyer promoting it. If you did either see or hear about such an event, I can imagine that it may have caused your child (and indeed yourself) some concern about what exactly is going on at school! I will try to explain as best I can from what we have unearthed (literally).

It would appear that a "squishee", one of those soft squeezy toys owned by a Year 3 student had developed a hole. Due to the hole, some of the internal "goo" was being released and a group of friends decided that the toy was "dead" and they should conduct a funeral. For reasons that remain unclear, a flyer was created at home and printed in multiple copies promoting this "funeral". The images contained, whilst cartoony, were not ones we like to see in school.  These flyers were handed out at playtime promoting the event, and through both the flyers and word of mouth the story took on a life of its own which may or may not have reached your child's ears.  A teacher on yard duty was able to collect a number of the flyers at the end of lunch and speak to a number of students.

It would appear that it was not the intention of these students to disturb or upset any students, they thought it was a fun thing to do. However, we do understand that talk of funerals could be very upsetting for students, particularly those that may have recently experienced a loss close to their family. At this stage we are unsure how many students may have encountered this story, nor how many may have been negatively impacted by it. If your child has been and you feel they need some form of additional support please let us know.

For the majority of students, this is a story they won't have had any knowledge of which is great. We just wanted to provide you with some backstory.

Have a good weekend,

Interschool Sport

The Winter season of Interschool Sport has just concluded. Across Term 2, our Year 6 and Year 5 student represent our school at home and away in four different sports. Some of the sports are modified to allow greater access to a wider variety of experience.

AFL 9s - a smaller scale version of Aussie Rules, where each team of 9 play in zones on a smaller field.

Fully Loaded Softball - a variation on traditional softball, with runners already starting on base to begin an innings. Other rule tweaks try to encourage greater success in scoring.

Soccer - traditional rules

Netball - traditional rules

We congratulate our Softball Girls who won all  their district games and will move on to Division finals next term. Well done on all our teams and athletes for giving sport a go!

Container Deposit Scheme Update

Container Deposit Scheme

Thanks to your hard work and generosity, we have been able to collect a huge number of containers. The bins at the front of the school are colour coded for each house so we can keep track of which house has collected the most!

So far this term we have already surpassed our Term 1 total! All up so far this year we have collected 2324 containers which equates to $232.40 that goes towards our Green Team and sustainability programs in the school. Thank you everyone!

Yr 5 News

Year 5s have returned from camp full of energy and are already diving headfirst into their learning. In Weeks 9 and 10, students have commenced their final projects for Term 3, which include:

  • Students have been focusing on information reports and have begun planning and drafting their writing. Their passion for their chosen topics has kept them highly engaged, and they’re looking forward to finalising and sharing their work at Expo in week 11!

  • They have been highly engaged in their Connected research project on endangered animals. Their level of enthusiasm and creativity has been fantastic, and they’re looking forward to putting together their final presentations soon.

  • The Year 5s haven’t stopped talking about their first camp experience and recently had the opportunity to share it with their Prep Pals. They showed great initiative in leading discussions about the camp layout, daily structure, and the different activities. Most of all, they loved sharing their personal highlights and the challenges they were proud to overcome — including the Big Swing, Crate Climb, and High Ropes!

We’re looking forward to a strong finish to Term 3! The Year 5s should be incredibly proud of all they have achieved so far.

What's up in Yr 6?

It’s hard to believe we’re already nearing the end of Term 2, we’re almost halfway through the year! Time has flown and our Year 6 students have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm, creativity, and collaboration. Over the past two weeks, they have been:

  • Working hard in Writing - converting their information reports into scripts and collaborating in groups across the year level to create BTN (Behind the News) videos on their chosen topics. Students are set to begin filming next week using green screens and microphones - something they are all very excited about!

  • Starting a new focus on probability in Maths, where they’ve been exploring key terminology and making connections to their understanding of fractions and percentages.

  • Building on their knowledge of animals and natural disasters by choosing a specific area of interest to research and present as part of a mini project for our Week 10 Expo - it's been wonderful to see their creativity shine.

  • Wrapping up Interschool Sport with their final round yesterday, marking the end of the winter season. Students gave it their all, and we were lucky not to be washed out once!

We’re so proud of the way our Year 6 students are embracing every opportunity, and we’re looking forward to a strong and exciting finish to the term!
