From the Principal

Expo

It's that time of term again when we open the classrooms up and invite you in to see what's been happening! The Whole School Expo is on again with an after school session  (Wednesday, September 17th 3.30pm-4pm) and a morning session  (Thursday, September 18th 8.30am-9am). We hope you can make it on one of the sessions so your child can take you through their learning.

Visit our SMILE Display at the Expo

Next week, as part of our school Expo, we warmly invite families to visit our SMILE

display in the Conference Room. Here, you’ll discover more about our whole-school approach to Wellbeing and Behaviour, which includes:

✨ SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

✨ Respectful Relationships

✨ Visible Wellbeing

✨ Diversity and Inclusion

Come and explore how these important programs work together to support every child at Ashburton Primary. Plus! - there will be a fun competition to enter — with a great prize up for grabs.

Parent Teacher conversation

Thank you to all the families who came out this week in person or attended online as part of Parent Teacher Conversations. We hope that the time enabled you to get a greater understanding of your child's progress, not only in their classroom, but also in specialist settings too.  Thank you to our wonderful staff for their work in getting through some long sessions too. It does disappoint when several teachers reported "no shows" - bookings where no one arrived nor sent a message to explain. We do set aside this time to allow for these meetings, so if you can't make it (and there are always many reasons that will pop up), please send a Compass Connect through to the teacher to let them know.

Parent Opinion Survey closes Friday 19th September

A reminder that our school is conducting the annual Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey offered by the Department of Education and is seeking your feedback. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.

Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies.

The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online from Monday 18 August to Friday 19 September 2025.

You will have received an email with further instructions, including your personal PIN to access the survey, earlier this term

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Resources are also available in additional languages to assist parents / caregivers / guardians who speak a language other than English at home. Please reach out to your child’s teacher, or the school directly for survey guides in your language.

End of Term 3

Next week is our final week for Term 3. With a Student Free Day on Friday, September 19th, the students' final day will be Thursday, September 18th with a 2.30pm finish. There WILL NOT be an assembly on that day. Friday will see teachers work on the further implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 before they then discharge their owed time in lieu for this week's Parent Teacher Conversations.

Yr 1 News

We are nearly at the end of the term and what a successful term it has been in Year 1 in term 3!

In the last fortnight, we have been focussing on :

Connected Learning - again, we packed our passports, fastened our seat belts and flew the many hours to Europe! We looked at the different languages spoken, the different foods and the flags of a range of countries amongst other things.

Reading - we read information texts about the countries and continents we have been studying in Connected Learning. This has been Vietnam, The Pacific Islands, India, South Africa and Europe. We took out the iPads and navigated online texts using the app ‘Epic!’ and read through a range of books.

Writing - we have been working towards writing a brochure of information about one of the countries we have read about. We are including information on food, games, flags, languages and celebrations.

Maths - we have finished up our unit on sharing and have moved into multiplication using repeated addition. To help us, we have been modelling this with counters and then writing the number sentence.

With one week left, we are looking to finish strong and have had an awesome term of learning.

Latest in Yr 3

Year 3s have been busy bees the last couple of weeks.

In Reading, the Year 3s are applying their analytical skills through Reading Comprehension and answering questions about various texts.

The students have been working on their Exposition speeches in Writing in connection with Connected Learning, with the focus on Accessibility in the school.

As we conclude the term, in Connected Learning, students are working on publishing their inclusive picture storybooks, which we will share with the Year 1 students.

Thank you to those who attended the Ashy Olympics last Friday for helping out and cheering on the students. The students were able to showcase their skills in long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hurdles, and various sprints, including the 100m, 200m, 800m, and 1500m events.

Students’ Reflection:

“It was so fun! I did triple jump, discus and shot put.”

“My friends and I agree, it was so fun, and it was such a good experience. We want to go again!”

“I’m really proud of how I did in the 200m and 800m sprint and long jump.”

“I tried 1500m and that was long!”

Prep News

Over the past two weeks the Prep students have spent time in each of the various prep classes learning about the cultures and celebrations in Japan, Germany and Italy. These learnings have been documented in an ever growing passport that will be shared to their families during EXPO next week.

Other learning experiences in Prep over the past two weeks have included:

  • Responding to various texts and connecting these to their own feelings and experiences (text to self connections).
  • Practising how to correctly count to 20 and beyond, ensuring that all items are counted.
    • Estimating before counting
    • Putting items in a line, pointing to each one and giving it a number, saying the number at the end and knowing this is how many in the collection.
  • Understanding the various parts of a day and what events happen during the morning, lunch, afternoon and evening times.
  • Learning the various letters that make the A sound such as ay, ai and a_e in phonics.
  • Being introduced to the ground, grass and sky dotted third lines to form letters correctly and the right size.
  • Playing together as a cohort during our Developmental Play sessions.

District Aths!

On Wednesday, September 10th, nearly 80 Ashy students from Years 3-6 headed back to Bill Sewart Athletics Track to compete in the Glen Iris District School Sports Athletics day. These students secured their place by their performances at last week's Ashy Olympics. We had much success in the day with many students heading off to the next level of Division, but it was great that so many first time athletes gave their all and had a good time. Thank you to Mr Worlley, Miss Mynott, Bella and Issi for helping out on the day.
